It was 36 feet long and weighed 400 pounds, I swear!
Dad took me fishing on Saturday and all I got was this lousy bass. :)
Seriously, though, it was good to get out there again. That’s the first time I’ve gone fishing with him since I was in my early teens. Thanks, Dad!
Hey, Kelly - the 90s called and wants its cell phone back
Clearly, getting a loaner cell phone and a loaner Lexus are two very different things.
My mother-in-law sent me to bed
Two weeks ago, we left for Tahoe Donner (Truckee) on a week-long vacation. My mother-in-law, Kathy, rented a cabin for the 8 of us. It was just the right size, with enough room for us all to spread out and be comfortable. The pool table in the game room downstairs was an especially nice touch.
The first night, there was a minor “incident”. A little after midnight, when everyone was pretty well lubricated and feeling good, Kathy decided it was time to go to bed. Unbeknownst to the rest of us, that meant that it was time for us to go to bed, too. And it’s not like she got up and verbally announced it; rather, she walked over to the light switch and turned the lights off. When no one budged, she turned them back on, and quickly off again. After a couple more rounds of this, we finally took the hint and shut it down for the night.
Escaping the smoke
A couple of weeks ago, we left for a week-long vacation to Tahoe Donner, and we couldn’t have picked a better day to leave. Check out the smoke in Roseville as we were leaving town:
Traveling with a 16 month-old
Sheesh.
The back seat of the cab is filled with baby junk, too.
Hmm... that was interesting
I just got a call from a reporter at the Sac Biz Journal wanting to ask me a few questions about growing up on a farm, and, more specifically, why I chose not to go into farming. She caught me off guard because I can’t remember the last time anyone ever seriously asked me what it was like to grow up on a farm.
As for why I chose not to farm, I was very honest and frank. The short answer is that there is a lot of risk and, within the past 30 years anyway, relatively little reward (unless you’re a big landowner, which my family is not). I wanted more stability, and, as luck would have it, I fell into a career that has given that to me.
George Carlin, dead at 71
George Carlin was a hero of mine. His comedic rants influenced my thinking in so many ways, particularly in learning to be more critical of everything. He was a giant – a genius – and his shoes will never be filled.
RIP, George.
