"fat hawaiian singer"
Google is so good.
For some reason, that “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” song popped into my head. I knew that an overbese Hawai’ian guy remade it over 10 years ago, but I had no clue as to his real name (which I have since learned was Israel Kamakawiwo’ole). So, I fired up Google and typed in “fat hawaiian singer”, and BAM! Fourth link on the page:
Incidentally, actually hearing the song left me with an instant, overwhelming sense of melancholy because it reminded me of Kelly’s late Aunt Lynn’s funeral. Lynn was a huge Wizard of Oz fan, and as part of her celebration of life, someone sang the original version of this song.
Bear is back
Bear Grylls is back, starting the filming of the remainder of Man vs. Wild Season 2. From the looks of things, we’re going to see more extreme environments, longer episodes, and a more transparent process:
The new shows will also now be two hours long, instead of one - partly because so many of the locations are so remote, but also so we can go into greater detail, and show the behind the scenes work, including the crew’s role.
Hello, Big Brother
Tackling a dilemma right out of a science fiction novel, the state Senate passed legislation Thursday that would bar employers from requiring workers to have identification devices implanted under their skin.
It’s pretty simple, really. Any company that requires me to surgically modify my body as a condition of employment will not be gaining my services.

He eats carrots
And avocados, and sweet potatoes, and rice, and…
So far (knock on wood), he has been a pretty mellow eater, and just within the past couple of days he has finally figured out how to get the food off of the spoon and keep it in his mouth. That’s a development Mom and Dad are very pleased to see. Homer? Not so much, though he has no clue about the banner “floor cleaning” days that lie ahead of him.
Another good piece on Pedroia
This time from his former college coach at ASU. It’s a great read. You really get a glimpse of why he has been so successful.
Pedroia in the New York Times
It’s pretty friggin’ cool to see a ball player from Woodland get written up in the New York Times:
“I love him,” pitcher Tim Wakefield said. “He gets it. He plays the game hard.”
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said that Pedroia, who was only 130 pounds as a freshman at Arizona State, had impressed him, too.
“All he’s done is what they’ve asked of him,” Cashman said. “He’s never failed anywhere.”
Applied Athletics
Look how firmly my feet are planted on the ground as I attempt to run down the birdie. I’m like a gazelle mired in a tar pit.
As in Mathematics, I am better at theory than application.
Bohemian Rhapsody, a capella
I’m a big Wayne’s World fan, and by extension a Bohemian Rhapsody fan, so when I saw this video, I was floored:
Ah, to be young and talented…
Sometimes you're a winner
My commute this morning was NOT one of those times.
See, they recently opened up a new road just off of my usual route. Ever the adventurer, I thought, “Hey, why not? I’ve got an extra 17 minutes to spare.” My hope was that this new road would give me a super-secret, Stonecutters-esque shortcut to my workplace. You know, a secret underground tunnel, accessible to only a privileged few, that avoids the traffic jams and the crazy-ass (and yet, maddeningly slow) Sun City drivers?
